Life With Lula

As you may recall, Cindy Lu, aka Little Lu, aka Lula, came to live at the Red Dog Inn last year. She’s taught us A LOT, and we thought Life Lessons from Lula would be an excellent addition to the site.

Life Lesson #1:  Don’t suppress your natural talent and ability.

When we go to our neighborhood park, the other dogs silently run after the balls thrown by their owners.  Not me! I am a little basset hound; therefore, I was born to bark and chase!  I happily and loudly pursue the long-legged speed demons on my gorgeous and muscely 3-inch gams, bellowing all the way!

Life Lesson #2:  Life is full of options!

The mistake many folks make with their bassets is they assume that when a command is given the basset must comply. To the contrary, when a command is given to a basset hound, we take your request under advisement and weigh our options — of which there can be MANY!   For example, I  know where my friend lives and will run to his house to ask for him to come out and play.  Mom will call me, but I have options and want to choose the best offer.  (Treats usually work with me like a HUGE signing bonus works with an NBA draftee.) My NOSE is a big influence. So is my Independent nature. I was bred to think for myself in the field while hunting quarry. So overriding centuries of breeding is a tall order.

Life Lesson #3:  Know who your friends are.

We made a great friend in the park. This man and his wife are SAINTS! They live on the edge of the park with their dog and routinely are visited by dogs from the park.  Blissfully, I know exactly where these two live and routinely visit.  I tested our friendship one day. Mom thought I was lost when the man said, “Wait a second. Let me check my house.” He looked and looked. Finally, he looked at his couch. YEP! There was I was, curled up on his couch watching the football game.  What a great friend he is! I even know where he keeps the good beer!
