How to Handle a U.F.O.

3 Oct

Would you know what to do if your dog ate an UFO — Unauthorized Foreign Object? I’m glad I did. Sofie ate half a vinyl glove right in front of me!

So, thanks to Auntie Dawn at Daphneyland, I knew what to do.

Out came the shot glass, the turkey baster and yes, the Hydrogen Peroxide. I poured a shot glass full of H2O2, filled the turkey baster bulb and attached the business end of the baster, then poor Sofie got to experience what a “beer bong” is like. The result: a completely cleared out pooch!

Follow up: We need to wait an hour before eating. (Butters and Lula are NOT happy about this!) Sofie will get a small meal  preceded 15 minutes by a Pepcid AC. :)

NOTES:
1 – I witnessed her eating the glove.  Timing is everything!  If it’s been over 2 hours, the UFO cannot be extracted this way.

2 – Please see this site for other instances in which you wouldn’t induce vomiting, e.g. the dog is already vomiting, the dog is unconscious, the dog ingested swallowed bleach, drain cleaner or a petroleum distillate product: http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com/induce-vomiting.html

Disaster Prep Evacuate with your Pets.

25 Aug

So Hurricane Irene is bearing down on the east coast. Many Americans are preparing to evacuate. PLEASE TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU!

Animals left behind are at risk for injury and death. Many escape enclosures and flee out of fear. Here are some tips and links to help you evacuate with your pet.

  • Make sure your pet has current ID with current numbers.  Include your cell phone. Also, add a number of a trusted friend or family member who is out of state.  Blanket ID is a good idea. You register the tag, then you can update your contact information on line.  If your pet gets lost, Blanket ID will start a campaign to area vets, groomers, etc. If your pet is found, the finder merely needs to enter the information in to the computer to get care information and details on how to get your pet back to you.
  • If you haven’t done so already, have your pets chipped. Make sure the chip is positioned correctly — under the skin typically at the bottom of the neck between the shoulder blades on the dorsal midline in dogs and cats. Livestock may have the RFID chip inserted in an ear.
  • If your pets are already chipped, double check the contact information the service has on file. I like HOME AGAIN. You can register your pet’s chips, even if they are from AVID, for about $17 annually.  You can upload an image of your pet as well as all information.  Then if your pet goes missing, you call, give the chip number (I keep mine in my cell phone) and Home Again will launch a recovery campaign by sending notices to all the area vet offices, groomers, pet stores and private citizens who have signed up to receive the alert.
  • Remember to pack food, water, favorite blankey, toy for your pet.  I also like to pack a towel and a brush. Towels are invaluable.
  • If you have a fold down crate or exercise pet, go ahead and pack it — just in case.
  • Remember a leash and baggies for clean up.
  • And packing hand wipes for yourself isn’t a bad idea either.

Those ideas should get you started. Here are other links to help you.

Is Nothing Sacred with Puppy?

4 Aug

Today is a screwy day here at The Red Dog Inn. It’s gardening day, which means the canines get to hang out in the garage until the gardeners leave.

All went well until I drove home to release the hounds!  After I left, Sofie apparently went on a tear!

When I arrived home, I noticed a blue plastic frame in the once pristine backyard and couldn’t figure out what it was. Then I went into the garage.

I thought, “I don’t have coffee in the garage. Is this soil?”

Then I noticed the fuzz on the garage floor, the other blue frame and a — wait for it — disintegrated golf ball!

Sofie had disassembled a charcoal filter! Out came the garage vacuum. Into the washer went the shaken out linens.

Then after dinner, Sofie came in from outside. The stench was awful! I looked all over for a canine landmine, but only found spots. Sofie has stepped in it and tracked it inside  (Have I mentioned we had a couple accidents this morning?) Out came the cleaner. Out went Sofie. After I’d cleaned the spots and took the rag into the garage, Sofie came in and I cleaned her paws. (This is some NASTY smelling stuff!)

Now, pushing 11 p.m., all is well. Puppy’s paws are clean. The carpet is clean.  The rags are in wash. Now I just need to take out trash and get to bed.

Seriously, is nothing sacred with a puppy?

A few tips and a warning to keep pets cool

23 Jul

It’s really hot, particularly for your pets.  Here are a few tips from others to keep your pets cool during these triple digit temps.  Remember 85* is scorching for your furry friends, so keep em cool folks.

Here’s my Pupcicles recipes. Butters loves them!

And remember to transport them carefully and never leave them in the car — even with the windows cracked. Leave them home with cool water, shade, a fan. Remember, leaving an animal in a hot car is considered ANIMAL CRUELTY in CALIFORNIA. It’s a violation of State Law.  If you see a pet in danger, CALL POLICE. INSIST they respond. (Costa Mesa PD, are you reading this? Leaving a pet in a car on a hot day is a violation of STATE LAW, specifically California Penal Code 597.7 PC!!)
